Altered Paint Brush

At the weekend Martin scoured the shed for some unloved paintbrushes. After base coating them a couple of times with black gesso I then gave them both a layer of black media paint, followed by a coat of dazzling metallic black shimmer. The right one I loosely tickled with gold media paint and the left one I coated quite thickly with media clear crackle.

Once it had dried I used my finger to smudge in gold media paint, I used a baby wipe to wipe it back so the paint stayed in the cracks.

I also painted some of the bristles with the gold too.

Now this ended up nothing like what I actually set out to do, but I decided that I didn't want to cover up too much of that lovely crackle.

I'd decided on a steampunky theme, but ended up making a face out of the parts.

The white on the brush above the eye is just where the glue is still wet. I gave him a dickie bow too.

His nose is a small screw with a watch part over the top, with a spring over the top of both.

Another head shot. Eyes are gears and watch parts, the tash is a brad and the mouth is a copper coil. Hair is from a stainless steel scourer (a new un-used one!!)

And finally a close up of the middle part which I just couldn't cover up as it's so decorative.

I've made this for a swap we are having over on the Mini Marvels FB group.

All products are from the DecoArt range.

Atc Swap - Texture

Patterned papers and newspaper text were added to the base of the mdf atc and given a coat of matte medium from DecoArt. The images were taken from an oriental atc book and the symbols down the middle is washi tape. Everything was given a coat of DecoArt media clear crackle.

The edges were outlined in radiant red metallic lustre.

Close up of the crackle after white antiquing cream had been applied and buffed up.

Unfortunately I forgot to take any step by step photos of the making of this one. I added a couple of pieces of thick corrugated, some patterned papers and some black modelling paste. I painted the whole atc with various colours of dazzling metallics and black chalky paint. I used orange flicker metallic lustre over the modelling paste, the wooden cog and the metal clock face.

Over at PA this week they have a theme of circles, so I am entering the bottom atc due to all the round elements on there!!

All products are from the DecoArt range.

About Time

Can't you just tell I'm back home now surrounded by all my craft stuff!!  Another take on the PA project by Teresa Abajo. This time I used the clock stencil in the background, the new LB colour pallet which blended perfectly and more watch parts and less cogs on this tag.

Close up of image covered in the watch parts.

Cogs & Gears

Over at the PA blog Teresa Abajo show cased her card and atc using buttons which you can see here. Thinking along the same lines I made a tag using a cog stencil and instead of buttons added mini gears, some watch parts and prestuds.

Tissue Paper Backgrounds

White scrunched up tissue paper was glued on this atc and once dried rubbed over with black archival ink, added an image mounted on a piece of card and a couple of words.

Black scrunched up tissue paper was glued to this atc and once dried I rubbed over it lightly with pewter treasure gold. Added the image, watch parts, washer and prestud, mounted the word onto black card.

Kraft Core Embossed Backgrounds

I had a play around with some Kraft core card and embossing folders and sanding them back to reveal the contrast of the core colour.  I cut some spellbinders cogs to add to this piece.

Black fresco paint was added to the background to give more contrast.

The chipboard frame and outer edges of the atc were embossed in black embossing powder, a rub on was rubbed onto acetate and placed over the image.

Another heat embossed frame this time in platinum. The words 'the voices' are coloured with stream and slate alcohol inks and black fresco paint.

Text book paper, T!m's grunge butterfly stamped onto acetate and placed over the image. The word is stamped from my new Sara Naumann plate from the Craft Barn Sale.

Bezels with Utee

I was watching some Utee uploads on YouTube and came across this one by the lovely Carol Fox. Using lots of different metal embellishments in the bezel I covered them in melted Utee and then used the heat tool to get rid of the air bubbles. I like this one as the spinner still spins.

For this one I cut out a piece of coloured text paper and added a silver coloured charm. I pushed the charm into the melted Utee.

I added gold coloured mini dragonfly beads and sequins to this very small bezel and filled with Utee.

This is a 1" Ranger memory frame and therefore doesn't have a back.  I placed a charm and 3 beads inside and filled with Utee.  As you can see, it's pretty transparent.

And this is it on my craft surface, as you can see, the Utee looks more yellow.

And this one is exactly the same except I used a single butterfly charm. But I need to go back and reheat this as you can see the top right corner has a bubble in it.

And again on the craft surface.

And here are all 5 together. Sorry for the glare but I used my new daylight lamp as it was nearly dark by the time I was finished.

It's a Man Thing - Artful Times

I never seem to have much of a stash of male cards, so when I saw this weeks theme for Artful Times that's what I decided to make.

I used the steampunk on the edge die to create this card along with Time Travellers stamp set.

Recycled Steampunk

I used an old dvd as the base of this hanging and covered it some papers I'd received in a swap.  Stamped images onto used brown envelopes, cut them out and glued them on.  The watch parts are obviously re-cycled along with the copper coil on the right out of Martins old camera. The silver bits are from a steel wool pad (these are not recycled as they were pinched before it was used - lol) and the string is also recycled.

Pocket Watch Mini's

I've been playing with the mini pocket watch die I got recently.  I thought they'd make nice embellishments eventually when I find something to put them on.  I cut quite a few out and punched the middle out of most of them so I could stack them up on the bottom one.  I painted two silver, one black and left the bottom left one on the natural corrugated cardboard.  The centre piece for that one is a vintaj brass disc embossed with the woodland die I picked up very cheaply in Utah and it transformed when I sanded it back.  Acetate was used between the top and second layer of each one.

Play Time

Been playing with all sorts of different things whilst sitting in the warm watching the snow come down!!  Used my new TH blueprint stamp set which I stamped twice and cut out the cogs to build it up.  The distress paints are lush, they just blend so well.  They were used to colour the mini cogs and the mini clipboard which holds the stamped cogs in place.  Alcohol inks on the bottom heart which has been covered in silver sticky foil and run through an embossing folder. Bits and bobs to finish it off.

Clock Canvas Collage

Linda is back with her third technique of the week over at the PaperArtsy blog, which you can find here.

Using my new clock stencil and texture paste I created the textured background.  I lightly sponged eggplant, claret, baltic blue, beach hut, pansy and nougat onto the canvas.   I stamped the images and words from the Ink and the dog, Clocks #3 plate onto tissue paper, cut them out and glued down with Mod Podge.  I swiped a black stazon ink pad over the canvas to pick up the texture paste.  I went back in with the paints and used a black Posca pen to hi-light the words.  I stamped the TH chicken wire in blaze red stazon and the script from the Ink and the dog background #2 plate in ultramarine stazon.  I edged the canvas with black paint.  Finally I added some watch parts to embellish.

This week the theme over at Out of a Hat Creations is clocks.  My canvas fits perfectly so I'm entering it into their challenge too.

A Personal Challenge

I have just joined a wonderful on-line craft group called 'Creativity Venture' set up and run by the lovely Sandra.  Now Sandra has put lots of work into the challenges to make us think 'outside the box'.  She collected personal information from each of us at the start.

So my personal challenge for this month was to take inspiration from the above tin which she sourced from ellenskaartjes.blogspot.com, do my own rendition and add as much of my own style into the piece as I wanted.

So off tin hunting I went and found this;

a mini whisky tin

and the inside.  It's quite a nice size and quite deep.

So I set to work collecting a few pieces, stamping some images.  The background is a piece of kraft resist from T!m's stack covered with picket fence distress stain.  The stamped images are from TH plates, the cogs are from the movers and shapers mini gears die and the arrows are from a cuttlebug die.

Once I'd placed them where I wanted them I put them all at different levels as you can see in the above photo to give some dimension.

This piece is going to make the inside of the lid, using some T!m papers, his cogs and stamp!!  I used the metallic distress stains on the cog and around the words.

Then I started working on the front (ie the lid) and this is where I took inspiration from the photo I'd been sent using the lacing and the torn and curled edges.  Again everything on the lid is from the T!m collection including the tissue tape around the edges.

So these are the pieces from earlier, now housed inside the tin and the bottom of the tin around the sides has been edged with card.  I haven't done anything with the inside edges of the lid, else it won't close properly!!!

And finally the outside edge looked a bit plain and boring as the paper I'd used only had very faint text script on and not all the way around, so I stuck on a strip of burplap.

Thanks once again to the Creativity Venture group and Sandra for challenging me - hope I've come up to scratch!!!

I also want to enter this piece into the Out of a Hat Creations challenge.  This week they have a bingo card and you have to pick a line.  Each of the lines includes a hat, still in keeping with the hatters tea party theme.  Can you guess which line I've used?
