Rustic

Another of my circles with a hole and piece cut out the middle.

I just kept going with it until I got the look that I wanted.

Close up of the rust powder, small balls and transparent powertex mix.

Then I went outside and took some photos when the sun popped out.

A close up of the colours and rust.

I love how this bit at the top has rusted.

I added rusty wire and nails.

Love how this bit rusted too with the dark and light.

More rust on the cardboard.

Rustic Hearts

I had a play with rust powder, ivory powertex and bister. The balls weren't meant to be there, but I had a little accident and knocked the pot over and that's where some of them landed!

This one has Decoart modeling paste through a stencil directly onto the mdf. Rust powder was mixed into the ivory powertex and spread over the mdf. Again the sand balls weren't meant to feature! I spritzed them both with a 50 / 50 of lemon juice and water. I again forgot to pick up some white vinegar.

Once they had been left for 24 hours and completely dry I sprayed them with yellow and then brown bister, drying in between colours.

This one has had the same treatment.

Close up after a third colour of bister has been added and dried.

Again a third colour of bister and you may also be able to see some cracks developing.

For the next layer I sprayed on some perfect pearls mist in green, it sort of gave it a patina look as it has a shimmer.

And on this one I sprayed with perfect pearls mist in bisque, which is like a champagne gold colour.

And finally I went over the sand balls with treasure gold.

I went over both the stenciling and sand balls with treasure gold on this one.

Close up of the sand balls after being treasure golded and you can still see the rust on the left.

Hopefully you can see how this catches in the light and you can still pick up the rust.

Rust Powder Canvas

Started off by pouring some ivory Powertex onto a 10 x 8 inch canvas, spreading it around and then adding in some medium sand balls and leaving to dry.

I also decided to add some string to the background before it dried. I mixed rusting powder (thank you Lesley) in with ivory Powertex, sand and a spritz of a 50/50 mix of lemon juice and water to make a paste.

Once the above mix was spread onto the canvas I then spritzed it with the lemon/water mix until it was literally saturated in it! You can use white vinegar too, but I didn't have any.

It started to rust immediately in some places, but I just kept wetting it with the spray.

You can see how wet it is bottom left and it's also pooled in the dips.

This was after it had been in the airing cupboard for about 12 hours.

Next I covered the whole of the outside with white media modeling paste and left to dry, it was quite thick as I peaked it using a pallet knife.

This is it completely dried after about 24 hours.

Love how it cracked in some places especially where it met with the rust powder.

I painted the outside with relic and then treasure Decoart Chalky Finish paints.

Then played around with lots of other colours from the media range (quin gold, quin burnt orange, trans yellow oxide, trans red oxide, paynes grey and prussian blue hue) until I was happy with it.

Love how the paint has settled into the cracks.
