Jigsaw Piece

 

After a mammoth resin casting session I finally got to play with some of the pieces.  I came across this rather large chipboard jigsaw shape and laid some of the piece on it until I was happy with the layout.

I put modelling paste through a stencil, attached the resin pieces with gel medium and once dry, painted everything with black gesso.

I used various colours and mixes of treasure gold, alchemy waxes and metallic lustres to colour the project.

And outside in the greenery.

DecoArt Pouring Medium

I was very kindly sent these products from DecoArt to play with - Americana paint set, pouring medium and top coat.

As it was a beautiful day, I decided to set up in the garden, especially as it's messy!

I chose four of the colours from the pack and mixed them 50/50 with the pouring medium.

Then I poured them one by one into another cup, black first, then the pink, grey and lastly the white.

And this is how much paint I had in total.

I took a 12 x 12 canvas, placed it on top of the cup and flipped it over.

And this was the result. Firstly I didn't make up enough paint as I couldn't get it to spread across the whole of the canvas, and secondly, I think I'd have been best to cover the surface in either a black or white mix first. Good news is, I've learnt stuff from it.

So I decided to have another go using the same colours.

This time I made up much more and had 3/4 of a cup as opposed to 1/4.

And this is what I poured out after lifting the cup off. I then tipped it and dribbled it to the edges.

I decided to try some different colours but didn't have much pouring medium left, so went for a smaller canvas.

Not much mixture to play with again.

Blue, green and white, and then I tipped.

I also tried the remainder of this pot on a small piece of glass and mopped some of the excess paint up that dripped on the paper.

It was windy, so I had to hold the paper down with pieces of decking wood.

So this is my first attempt which I quite like. It wasn't fluid enough and I didn't mix up enough paint to start with. Also I dropped it face down onto the paper so that didn't help either!!!

This was the result of my second attempt using more paint.

I didn't have any large deep edge canvas's but love how this edge came out.

They came out great.

The deep sides definitely work best.

This is the one on the piece of glass.

It sort of split when it dried and you can see the light through it.

And this is the back looking through the glass.

This piece I just squished into the paint that had dripped off into the paper.

Tomorrow when they are fully dry I am going to give them a layer of top coat and we'll see if it changes anything.

I've also found out that I apparently should have created 'cells' using this technique, but as you can see, that didn't happen!!

I've had great fun and learnt a few things along the way that I'd do different next time, but unfortunately I've used all the pouring medium and we still can't get it here in the UK yet!!

Jigsaw Piece

Had another little play, this time with a chipboard jigsaw piece which measures approx 4". 

Added salt to a paint wash to get the pitted effect.

Added texture sand paste to get a rust effect, except I wanted it more of a white rust than an orange rust.

And here I did want a rusty orangey rust effect.

Just a bit of a play and an experiment with different colours.

Rustic Steampunk

I started off by scraping grunge paste through 3 different stencils onto a large corner shaped chipboard jigsaw piece.

I randomly painted various chipboard die cut shapes in little black dress and pewter fresco.

Now over at the PA blog Alison was playing around with rusting powder on her 3rd project for this week.  I don't have any of the PA rusting powder but I do have a realistic rust kit which I bought ages and ages ago, so thank you Alison for inspiring me to get it out and use it again!!

And this is the final piece using an arch and a few of the cogs that have all been rusted.  I punched holes into the arch, added eyelets and threaded through wired raffia. Added chain and two chipboard cogs to the top to hang it.  I put a larger cog in the open space and added an idea-ology cherish tag.  I added cogs, gears, other bits of metal including a wired 'S' shape.

Our Creative Corner have a theme this month of tic tac toe - steampunk. If you check over on their blog you can see the ingredients for each line.  I've gone with letters, texture, wire.

Over at Country View Crafts they have a theme of letters this month. I'm going to enter with the word 'cherish' but I'm not actually sure that it will count.

Frayed Dreams

Sue Carrington is back this week over on the PaperArtsy blog.  I've loosely aimed my piece around her first project, taking inspiration from the colours and the stamps.

I crackled the jigsaw piece, bottom layer, French roast, top layer snowflake.  Stamped the main LP image and the row of flowers.  Masked them off and added London bus, limelight and zesty zing to the background.  The zesty zing over the London bus created the orange!!

The flowers are coloured with watered down blood orange and haystack, with a touch of eggplant in the centre.  Eggplant was used to colour the words and the banner was coloured with blood orange.

Anything but a Card have a theme of Summer Fun and PanPastelsUk have a theme of flowers.

Stampotique have a colour challenge, shades of yellow, orange and purple.

Art Journey & a Photo

Art Journey's theme this month is 'use a photo'.  I've had loads of fun with this one.  I printed out a photo from our ski holiday (2011, as I missed this year!!), just onto normal photocopier paper.  I covered a large piece of chipboard in the shape of a jigsaw piece with white gesso.  I then gave it a coat of acrylic dabber paint in sandal.  I outlined it with cloudy blue acrylic paint. I gave it a blast with the heat gun to make sure it was totally dry.  I then painted on a very generous coat of Golden soft (matte) gel.  You have to be quick as it dries really fast.  I put the printed copy face down into the gel and used an old credit card to really smooth it over.  After a few seconds I peeled the paper off and voila, the image had transferred.  It's not perfect, but I was very happy with the result.  I then gave it another coat of the gel.  Once dried, which wasn't long, I added a bit more acrylic paint with my fingers to the sky.  I stamped on the AJ words, Precious Moments and swiped them over with a bit more paint.  I stamped the AJ characters onto a separate piece of card which I'd painted with juniper acrylic paint, cut them out and mounted them onto the jigsaw piece.  Finally I added some fibres.

Today the sun was out and this photo is a much truer representation of the colours.

Vintage Jigsaw Puzzle Piece

I made this for a one to one swap with Burn, through the PaperPlay forum.  They are large chipboard jigsaw shaped pieces approx 5" x 7".  Burn decided on a vintage theme.

Firstly I gesso'd the background then applied a few colours of pan pastel, added a napkin using mod podge and when dry stamped script over it. I found a lovely image and arranged hessian, jute scrim, fibres and lace.  I cut a flower from T!m's tattered floral dies in a cream fabric and added a vintage button, skeleton leaf and gem pearls. A strip of fabric was coloured with distressed stain and heated slightly so it singed, I tied it in a bow and attached a mini pin and a word charm faith.  I added beads to a long pin and placed it in the hessian, a cluster gem and a key.  The top looked a little bare, so I coloured a grungeboard flourish and added some small pearl gems.

The PanPastel challenge blog theme this week is 'add a flower', so I am entering my jigsaw piece. 

Steampunk Chipboard Jigsaw

The base of the chipboard is painted with black acrylic paint and smooched over with metallic russet lumiere paint and edged in old brass.  The cogs, key and lock are dabbed with old brass, metallic rust and pewter.  Chains and the clock charm were added along with the labels from a TH alteration die.  The brads are from a papermania kit and the images I purchased from an esty digi site.

Large Jigsaw Shape

This is a large chipboard jigsaw piece which measures approx 7" x 5".  I stuck various findings to the raw chipboard, then covered in silver sticky tape.  I burnished around each shape using my metal tools and a paper stump to define each shape.  Using meadow, stream, eggplant, sail boat and citrus alcohol inks I coloured the background, this took a few coats to achieve the desired colour.  I then used black acrylic paint to swipe over and wipe off the access.  Once dry I applied rub n buff in red copper, jade and pewter.  Finally I cut up a quote, edged each word in black soot distress ink and applied to the jigsaw piece.
